Winners of the British Beacon Mosque Awards 2020 celebrate with their trophies

Winners of the British Beacon Mosque Awards (BBMA) 2020 rejoiced across the UK, as they received their trophies in person. Shaukat Warraich, CEO of Faith Associates, travelled across London, Bradford, Rochdale, and Manchester to hand out the awards and congratulate the winners for their exemplary work.

Established in 2018, the Beacon Mosque Awards acknowledge and highlight the work of British Islamic faith leaders and institutions across 10 categories. The BBMA were created to showcase the pivotal role mosques and Islamic centers play in local communities and the multiple ways in which they positively contribute to the U.K.’s social fabric. The initiative encourages faith institutions to strive for excellence in various domains including youth outreach, governance, and community services. While the BBMA have had over 350 Mosque leaders in attendance in both 2018 & 2019, the 2020 instalment of the Awards had to be held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Plenty of beaming smiles and happy faces were captured on camera as the winners finally received their BBMA trophies. Some notable moments are shared below.

Best Youth Service 2020 Winners: Hayes Muslim Centre

Hayes Muslim Centre have consistently provided various youth services and activities to the youth in Hayes and Harlington, this was continued in 2020 during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Through the ECB ‘All Stars’ Programme, Hayes Muslim Centre worked with the England Cricket Board to train the head Imam to provide cricket sessions for the youth every week, providing a source of exercise and entertainment for young children on a consistent basis.

Most Impactful Alimah 2020 Winner: Shaykha Noshin Gul

Shaykha Noshin Gul was born in Birmingham and currently resides in Manchester. After completing her undergraduate degree in Applied Chemistry and postgraduate studies in Material Engineering in 2005, she travelled to Syria in the pursuit of traditional sacred knowledge. Shaykha Noshin Gul specialises in Quranic Phonology (Tajwid) and has been awarded a licence to teach (Ijazah). She currently serves on the board of Guidance Hub in Manchester and is a lead on many of the activities and initiatives.

Best outreach program 2020 Winners: Masjid Al Falaah 

Masjid Al Falaah are a Mosque in Birmingham that provide various services and support to the local community (including their Homeless, Foodbank and Refugee services), for both Muslim and Non-Muslim individuals.

Best Madrassah Service 2020 Winner: Lantern Academy

Lantern Academy is an innovative Madrassah located in Central Rochdale. They put their students’ wellbeing at the heart of everything that they do, therefore offering not only high-quality education, but also a rich variety of resources and character development activities.

Most Innovative Service 2020 Winners: Al Markaz Ul Islami

Al Markaz Ul Islami were the first Mosque in the UK to implement technology for sanitization used for worshippers after lockdown, aimed at improving the safety and cleanliness of the Mosque for worshippers.
