Faith Associates launches COVID-19 Mosque Response Document Showcasing the Services Provided by Mosques to support communities affected by COVID19
The COVID-19 outbreak has had a profound effect on Mosques and the communities they serve across the country.
During the 1st and 2nd national lockdown periods in 2020 and now during the 3rd lockdown at the start of 2021, many Mosques across the UK have been doing more to help the less fortunate in their communities by providing essential services such as food supplies and medicine packs.
We have seen the many innovative ways in which Mosque staff, volunteers and leaders have supported those in need throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. We set up the Beacon Mosque COVID-19 Directory in 2020 to adequately highlight and showcase the various services Mosques were providing, we felt it was very important for the public to be made aware of the help that is available to them.
Mosques have been transformed into food banks, drop off centres [medicines and PPE], elderly support hubs, mortuaries and now Covid-19 vaccination hubs as the UK vaccine rollout intensifies.
Mosques have mobilised in a great way and the data submitted on the Mosque Directory that has been compiled into this report is an innovative way to showcase the array of services being provided/available.
Shaukat Warraich, CEO of Faith Associates, believes the COVID-19 Mosque Response report highlights the important work that has and is being done by Mosques in the UK which has sometimes been overlooked; “We have had over 200 individual submissions of Mosques providing various support services to communities across the country, the sheer scale of support being provided by Mosques highlights the important role that is played here and across the world by faith institutions”.
At each stage of the pandemic over the past year, Mosques have responded and stepped forward when needed; institutions provided PPE support when there were shortages, providing mortuaries for the community when there was a lack of space, providing food banks that reduced the pressure on community services and now playing a pivotal role in vaccinating the community through vaccine hubs.
This is a Version 1 of the report, with editions to be published regularly as more services and Mosques are introduced. Visit the COVID-19 National Directory HERE
